Presentation
Hypothesis
If I use more vinegar then the eruption height should increase because when you add vinegar to baking soda it creates carbon dioxide gas(corbon dioxide gas)
Research
Research shows that baking soda is made out of sodium bicarbonate
and vinegar is an acid so by mixing them together it creates carbon dioxide gas
which builds up, making the vinegar+baking soda mixture to rise.
Variables
Independent Variable: The amount of vinegar.
Dependent Variable: the eruption height.
Controlled Variable I will keep the amount of vinegar the same volcano same type of vinegar same.
Procedure
- Step #1, build the volcano.
Place a bottle in the middle of the try then build up the mountain with sand ten place playdough on the sand for the rocky texture and look. Step #2 start the experiment!
-
Pour baking soda into the volcano, start with
-
1 tablespoon of vinegar then go higher here is a list of all the amounts of vinegar.
-
1 tbsp
-
2 tbsp
-
3 tbsp
-
4 tbsp (¼ cup)
-
6 tbsp (⅓ cup)
-
8 tbsp (½ cup)
-
12 tbsp (¾ cup)
-
16 tbsp (1 cup)
Step #3 collect data. Look at each eruption what do I notice? Step #4, conclusion Look at the conclusion.
Observations
Observations:/Notes
During Trial 1, the volcano took about a minute to start erupting after I added the vinegar. As the amount was too little the eruption was not high at all. It actually didn't look like a volcano. Almost no noticeable eruption !
| Material | Measurement |
|---|---|
| Baking soda | 1 ⅕ tablespoons |
| vinegar | ¼ cup |
| Dish soap | A small squeeze |
| Food colouring | A few drops |
Analysis
When I did the experiment, I noticed that the amount of vinegar affects the eruption size and it had a bigger reaction. When I poured in the vinegar I noticed that it got higher by each teaspoon
Conclusion
So In conclusion, I learned that mixing vinegar and baking soda will create carbon dioxide gas which will push the mixture to rise up and make a foam version by adding food coloring and dish soap building the volcano was pretty easy i build 3 versions of my volcanos one with 2x holes and the other tow were just regular volcanos.
Application
My experiment shows how chemicals react to each other for the reaction it needed baking soda and vinegar they create a colorful foamy liquid when mixed tougher they create Carbone dioxide gas which then courses for the mixture to rise up and also to make a good looking reaction
Sources Of Error
for my errors, when i did the experiment i accidently poured like 4-5 cups of baking soda counseling an out of control mess then one the first experiment i accidently poured the v vinegar out of the volcano making the volcano lose its color because vinegar is a cleaning liquid it did lose a bit of its colors but on the bright side, the experiment was interesting and fun.
Citations
when Iwas researching i used the CYSF website for inspiration then after a while I Had an idea at for I planned to make a DIY battery-powered welder but then it was to complicated then I came up with another one where it was a water filter system but that was gonna be to wet then I finally did the volcano. At first, I thought it was going to be complicated but then I watched some videos on what it is then I started to understand the entire thing.
Acknowledgement
I would like to thank you my teachers Ms. Olfert, Ms. Duncan for helping me with advice and for giving me tips for this project and I would also like to thank my mom, for helping me build my volcano buy the supplies doing the experiment and for helping me make the video and for giving me the advice as well tank you all for helping me do this project.
