Problem

The point of this project is to find out more about artificial intelligence and how it will impact our future. This includes what it is, and how it is evolving. Another thing that is included in this project are many different industries that it could impact. This includes, but is not limited to, healthcare, social media, climate change, logistics, and autonomous vehicles. Some more information this my project includes are pros/cons and how it can be more transparent.

Method

My method is that I am going to do a lot of research based on AI and I will also make a tri-fold based of of it as well.

Research

What is AI and who founded it-

Artificial intelligence is, “the simulation of human intelligence in machines”. The machines mimic humans' thinking, learning, problem solving, and decision making processes.

AI was founded by 2 computer scientists, Alan Turing and John McCarthy. Alan Turing is considered the “founding father” of AI due to his work in introducing the Turing test in 1950. Turing’s idea for AI arose from a combination of his deep understanding of computation, his philosophical reflections on the mind, and his belief that machines could, in theory, be made to think. Since he was English it is considered that AI was started in England.

What goes into creating AI-

  1. Data collection- Gather large, diverse and often labelled data.
  2. Data preprocessing- Clean, format, and engineer features to make data usable for models.
  3. Choosing an AI Model: Select an appropriate algorithm or neural network based on the task
  4. Training the Model: Feed data into the model to adjust parameters and learn patterns
  5. Testing & Evaluation: Test the model on unseen data to measure accuracy and performance, adjusting it as needed.

Progression of AI over the last few decades-

AI  has gone from basic systems from the 1950’s to 1980’s and turned into the sophisticated complex systems we know of today. In the future AI will be more powerful and useful.

Why does AI need data-

Data is like fuel that runs AI- the more high quality and relevant the data is- the better it performs. AI learns from examples,  if we wanted AI to recognize an animal, then we would have to show multiple photos that all have different lighting, angles, and environments. If the data was invalid or biased, such as one animal picture, AI  may make mistakes or be unfair in its predictions.

 Different types of artificial intelligence-

  • Narrow AI- Narrow AI is the type that us humans interact with the most and are usually designed for a specific purpose. It includes voice assistants like Siri, recommendations on Netflix or Amazon, and even self-driving cars. They can only handle tasks in their programming.
  • General AI- General AI is AI that is able to understand, learn, and apply knowledge across a wide range of tasks, which is similar to human abilities.
  • Super Intelligent AI- This type of AI surpasses our human intelligence in every aspect possible. It is mostly used for research and is a concept for science fiction.

How can AI systems be made transparent-

  1. Explainability- Explainability means that AI models, especially complex ones, are able to create clear and understandable justifications for their decisions and predictions.
  2. Auditing AI models-  Auditing AI models involves tracking and documenting the decision-making processes of AI systems to allow for independent verification and accountability.
  3. Bias and Mitigation detection- This aims to identify and eliminate bias in AI systems to prevent unfair or discriminatory outcomes.
  4. Clear documentation and feedback- We need to keep good notes about how to use AI so that people will understand how to use it. That way if people have problems they will be able to tell us.
  5. Laws and rules for AI- As there are rules to make sure that companies treat us fairly, AI users should also follow rules. With rules AI companies can stay in check and make sure AI is used for good.
  6. Humans-in-the-loop- Us humans should stay involved with AI instead of letting it make decisions on its own. That way humans can make sure AI is being used responsibly and have the final call.
  7. Adversarial testing- AI should be checked for mistakes from time to time to ensure satisfaction. We can test it through putting it through different situations and if it does well then it is more reliable and trustworthy.

Autonomous Vehicles-

There are many challenges in AI powered cars,  such as improving sensor reliability, handling complex real-world environments, addressing ethical dilemmas, ensuring regulatory compliance, and gaining public trust. Many people don’t trust these vehicles because they worry about the technology's ability to make crucial decisions in real-world situations. If they want to build public trust,  it requires rigorous safety testing, full transparency about how the AI systems work, and ongoing improvements in the technology to ensure reliability.

Education-

AI can help with learning, like if a student needs help with a concept AI can break it down and provide explanations through videos or step by step. It can help teachers with grading tests, quizzes, and essays. AI can help create interactive content, such as quizzes, exercises, or even textbooks for teachers as well. Apps like Duolingo use AI to help users learn a new language and Google Translate can help with translating other languages.

Climate Change-

  1. Predicting the Future (Modelling Climate Change)- AI can help scientists create models of what could happen to the earth based on the decisions we make today.  These predictions can help us know what might happen to the Earth if we keep doing things the way we are or if we make changes to help the planet.
  2. Mitigation Strategies- AI can help figure out the best things we can do to slow down climate change, like using cleaner energy or planting more trees.

Sports-

AI is transforming sports by enhancing both performance and fan engagement. It helps teams improve by analyzing player stats, predicting injuries, and offering strategy recommendations. For fans, AI personalizes content and supports broadcasters with real-time analysis. Virtual assistants and AI-powered training tools are making the sports experience smarter and more exciting.
