Problem

Does performing relaxation activities lower a person’s blood pressure?

blood pressure matters a lot because it has a major affect in our lives. Hypertension(high blood pressure) that has stretched out of its limits can be life threatening and also sets a higher chance for a heart disease called cardiovascular disease. Hypo tension (low blood pressure) can cause you to faint,fall-related injuries and dizziness.Extremely low blood pressure can be life threatening as well as it stops blood reaching to some of the most major organisms.

Method

First, I got a blood pressure monitor, timer, chair, and notebook. The volunteer sat quietly for 5 minutes. Then I measured and wrote down the blood pressure. Next, I asked the volunteer to do different activities. After each activity, I measured and wrote down the blood pressure again. I repeated the same steps several times and recorded all the results. Then I compared the blood pressure readings to see how different activities affected blood pressure.

Research

What is blood pressure? Blood pressure is how strongly blood flows through your body. Think of it like a water hose: if the water comes out very hard, it is like high blood pressure (hypertension), and if it comes out softly, it is like low blood pressure (hypotension). Every time your heart beats, it pumps blood into a large artery called the aorta. This happens about 40–60 times per minute, all day and night. Blood pressure is measured in mmHg. A normal blood pressure for most adults is under 120/80 mmHg. Blood pressure that is too high can increase the risk of heart disease, and blood pressure that is too low can also cause health problems. Hint: mmHg is the unit used to measure blood pressure.

Why is it important? al ot because it has a major affect in our lives. Hypertension(high blood pressure) that has stretched out of its limits can be life threatening and also sets a higher chance for a heart disease called cardiovascular disease. Hypotension (low blood pressure) can cause you to faint,fall-related injuries and dizziness.Extremely low blood pressure can be life threatening as well as it stops blood reaching to some of the most major organisms.

what is high blood pressure?

  • Also known as hypertension
  • Has no warning signs
  • High blood pressure is over 130/80 mmHg
  • Changes throughout the day based on your activities
  • The higher it rises the more risk there is for stroke, heart disease and heart attack
  • Happens when the blood in your body flows really fast What is low blood pressure ?
  • Symptoms include faintness, blurred vision, not being able to focus and dizziness
  • When hypotension is lower than 90/60 mmHg
  • also called hypo tension
  • If someone elses hypotension is low for them for the other person it might be ok.
  • Because of dehydration and other medical things What equipment do use to measure blood pressure?
  • Wrist and finger monitors are not good to use
  • Using a tested monitor is better but if you are not sure ask your doctor or a pharmacist
  • the equipment should be worn properly for most accurate readings
  • best way to measure blood pressure is with a digital upper arm monitor cuff
  • How is blood pressure measured?
  • person should sit comfortably without crossing their legs
  • cuff is placed around the upper arm and fitted properly
  • cuff tightens for a moment and then slowly releases to measure whether blood pressure is high or low

Does our blood pressure stay the same all the time ? * blood pressure doesn’t stay the same all the time * goes up when something exciting happens, like hearing a big surprise, or when we do hard exercise * goes down when we are resting or not moving much * Hypertension causes (high blood pressure) * high blood pressure can damage your body for years without you knowing * if not treated well it will have major chances of heart attack and also strokes * When hypertension happens it can cause nose bleeds and headaches too * can also cause short breathing * Some people don’t get these symptoms but the ones i mentioned earlier only happen at life threating situation * sometimes hyper tension is caused by age and stress * Risk of uncontrolled blood pressure * has many risks some that are life threatening * Hypertension starts to damage your heart day-by-day little-by-little and slowly your heart begins to start failing, then at one point it will be a life threatening situation * can also cause blindness, chest pain, stroke, memory loss, irritated mood ,personality changes and loss of breath * How to manage Hypertension * measure it because it doesn’t have any official signs or warnings so this is like the only way to find out * Eating a healthy diet and having regular physical activity can also reduce your risks for higher blood pressure * Ways to keep blood pressure healthy * ways to keep your blood pressure healthy is by ;not smoking (as it affects your lungs) and have do regular physical activity everyday and eat healthy food/fruits,don’t have too much salt and take medicine for blood pressure * RELAXATION AND SOLUATION * Deep Breathing Steps; simple and powerful relaxation technique that can be done anywhere * sit up straight in a quiet, calm place. Close your eyes and breathe in slowly through your nose * Hold your breath for a few seconds, then breathe out through your mouth. Repeat until you feel calm. Deep breathing helps slow the heart rate and relax the body, which may lower blood pressure. Mindfulness • Helps lower stress • Makes you aware of your thoughts and actions • Helps you pause before reacting • Helps you understand situations better Meditation • Helps you focus on what is happening right now • Reduces stress and worries • Teaches you to stay calm instead of reacting • Done by lying down in a quiet place and closing your eyes • Being calm can help keep blood pressure healthy * * RELAXATION EXPERIMENT 1. (WITH MY FATHER) * Does deep breathing lower blood pressure? Materials * Blood pressure monitor * Timer * Chair * paper and pencil * Procedure 1. My father sat quietly for 5 minutes. 2. We checked his blood pressure\, and it was high. 3. My father did deep breathing slowly for 3 minutes. 4. We checked his blood pressure again. 5. We recorded the results. Results Time Blood Pressure Before Deep Breathing High After Deep Breathing Lower * Experiment 2: Quiet Rest / Mindfulness We checked my uncle’s blood pressure and it was high than it usually is. * So after that I told my uncle to sit down for five minute so he could do some quite rest and take some time for mindfullness. *

He closed his eyes and and relaxed for five minutes * We checked his blood pressure again and this time it wasn’t 160/100 anymore instead it got lower and was 135/88 * We wrote the results down and recorded them EXPERIMENT 3 This was my third experiment and to be honest I really thought that my mom’s blood pressure would go kind of back to normal. * we measured my mom’s blood pressure and it was 150/92 mmhg * I told her to sit down for five minutes and be very calm * Then i told her to listen to calm music for a few minutes * After five minutes we checked it again and write the results * The last reading was 125/80 RESULTS according to the results it turned out that when my mom listened to the calm music her heart started to pump slower and it kind of started to match the tone. During this time I noticed that earlier (berfore being calm) she was breathing kind of quickly but once she repeated the process ,her body seemed to calm down which meant that my thought was right. EXPERIMENT 4 I had one of my friend who gets her blood pressure high pretty often and she decided to let me test her: * MATERIALS -paper -pencil -blood pressure machine -phone * She sat down and we put her to test. The firs thing we did was to check it.it was 180/90.We put on some loud noises on the phone like scream, cries and more for 5 min and it stayed the same. Then we put on some calm stuff and after 5 min we tested again and it did get lower. EXPERIMENT.5 This time I did jumping jacks for 2 minute to see if my blood pressure stays the same or not. * materials -paper -pencil -blood pressure machine * I did jumping jacks for 2 minutes and without resting quickly tested my bp.It turns out it did get higher. That was because my heart started to pump faster eachtime i did one jumping jack. * CONCLUSION * After testing different people, I found that their blood pressure went down after doing deep breathing, mindfulness, or meditation. These activities helped their bodies feel calm and relaxed. The same way after I tested people with low bp to get higher it got higher. * This shows that my hypothesis was correct: relaxing can make the heart beat slower and lower blood pressure. Doing simple relaxation activities can help keep the heart healthy. While excercising can also work * QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT STILL HAVE * How often should people do relaxation ativities?

answer: you should do it everyday even for a few minutes is okay * Why is it important to learn to relax

answer : It helps your heart and body stay healthy

  • Why do some people feel dizzy after relaxing?

answer: sometime the blood pressure drops too quickly but its usually for a bit of time
