Moon Phases

I did this project so I know the MOON PHASES and learn more facts about the moons.

Problem

The moon chnages shapes and sizes every night, but the reason behind it is not fully observed. My science fair project talks about why the moon changes into different phases.

Method

MY METHOD WAS THAT I WOULD REASEARCH MY PROJECT AND THEN LATER ON WHEN I GOT MY WHOLE REASERACH DONE I WOULD WRITE IT DOWN ON A TRIFOLD WITH MY OWN WORDS.

Research

The moon goes through different phases that can be seen from Earth. Many ancient civilizations documented these phases, but a notable milestone occurred in 1610 when Galileo Galilei, using a telescope, provided one of the earliest detailed descriptions of the moon's surface and its transformations. Johannes Hevelius expands this exploration, presenting 40 engravings of the moon in a book published in 1647.

New Moon

The New Moon is in the shape of a  full circle moon. It occurs about once a month when the earth, sun, and moon are in a line and the earth is between the sun and moon. The new moon is the first lunar phase

Waxing Crescent:

The Waxing Crescent is in the shape of a crescent. It occurs about once a month and rises around 8:30 to 9:00 AM, and sets around 9:30 to 10:00 PM. It stays about 7.38 days until the next phase.

First Quarter:

The First Quarter is in the shape of a half illuminated  circle. It is a primary moon that occurs when the next night the Waxing Crescent phase is over.

Waxing Gibbous:

The Waxing Gibbous is in the shape of a hump-back. It occurs once a month, it rises around 3:00 PM and sets around 3:00 AM. It stays about 7.38 days until the next phase.

Full Moon:

The Full Moon is in the shape of a thin crescent. It occurs when the moon is on the same side of the sun.

Waning Gibbous:

The Waning Gibbous is in the shape of a hump-back. It repeats every 29.531 days.

Third Quarter:

The Third Quarter is in the shape of a half- moon. It has has completed ¾ of its orbit around the earth.

Waning Crescent:

The Waning Crescent is in the shape of a sickle. It starts right after the Third Quarter ends and this starts and finishes when the New Moon starts.

Data

For this project, I researched about all the different moon phases and I also observed them in person by looking at the sky every night. I notivced that every few days, the moon chnages into a different shape and size, so I recorded it down by drawing them in little notebooks that I made.

Conclusion

In conclusion, my project helped me learn more about how the moon chnages each day, which can help us predict the moon phase for the next day.

Acknowledgement

  • I would like to Acknowledge my biger sister, that she helped me on this project for the science fair.
  • My sister helped me by helping me reasearch, encourage me, and help me on this science fair project since it was my first time doing it.
  • My school supported my project, so I would like to Acknowledge my teacher Ms.Neely for letting me use her classroom to work on it and give me nice encouraging me with encouragement words. :)
