processing power: We chose the Raspberry Pi 4 as it has retro pie great price for value, and has HDMI.
battery: You will need a rechargeable battery or a battery that you can switch easily with another, or instead of the hassle you can use a power bank.
screen: For the screen, you will need a small enough but good quality and high res screen.
controls: For the controllers, you need something that copies the movement of joysticks on a normal controller.
Conclusion
In conclusion making a game console, a handheld one, is around the $80 mark, we did struggle a bit as expected but not as much as we are both experienced in our respective fields, and finally the user experience was better than we thought as we bought the Raspberry Pi 4 that had minimal input delay and great quality and no lag.
