Hydraulic Cardboard Robotic Arm

I have made a Hydraulic Robot Arm by using cardboard and syringe. It demonstrates how hydraulic power works.

Hypothesis

A curious question I have is will a hydraulic powered machine fail or be successful? If a Hydraulic Robotic Arm works, then that is because of a simple machine called levers. I think that the levers will act like seasaw with a fulcrum (wooden skewers), the load (which it is carrying) and effort from a syinge. My robotic hand wll be a first class lever.

Research

What is hydropower?

Hydropower is a space where water moves a wheel and axle to produce such things like electricity. In other words it is energy that comes from moving water.

Why is hydropower important?

Hydropower is important because...

-They can provide power to the grid immediately

-They provide a back up generator when electricity is gone

-Better for the environment

-Can produce clean water

-Can KIND OF keep flood control

-Irrigation support

-Not expensive and renewable

Which places use this the most?

China, Canada and Brazil.

Global Use of Hydroelectricity | EARTH 104: Earth and the ...

Is hydropower popular?

Yes indeed! Over 60% use this type of power!

Variables

My variables are the robotic hand, item it's carrying, and amount of time it takes to carry. The manipulated variable is the type of items it is carrying and it's density. The responding variable was the amount of time it took to carry and item. The controlled variables were the robotic hand.

Procedure

You need: Cardboard, 8 syringes with rubber piston, 4 pipes, 1 popsicle stick, food colouring, glue, water, cable ties, a drill, and patience . You will also need a Coca Cola empty can.

  1.  Get cardboard and measure  on it. Afterwards, cut the rectangles and take a wooden skewer and instert a two holes.
  2.  Make a traingle at an angle of  , 2 squares at  and smaller squares too. Cut it out and add holes as well.
  3. Take the longer rectangles and make space for syringes and glue wooden skewers into the hole.
  4. Take the medium rectangles and apply them on top of the main arm. Put the traingler pieces at the bottom. It should look like this:
  5. Put the smaller square pieces on top of the base. This will make it sturdy.
  6. Take you're base and hot glue the robotic arm on. (Be careful! Ask an adult for help if needed)
  7. Take a 10mL syringe with a rubber piston and drill a hole on the rubber piston.
  8.  Take 2 cable ties and use one to secure around the body of the syringe. Take the other cable tie and a wooden skewer and silp the cable tie under the cable tie on top of the syringe. Then, pull it into with the wooden skewer to get the exact measurement of the skewer.

Observations

Analysis

Conclusion

The main purpose of this experiment was engineering, physical science, and chemical. I leared that a simple machine, levers, is a movable plank that pivots on a fulcrum attached to a fixed point. The lever works by adding forces at different parts from the fulcrum, or a pivot. I also learned about compressablity, and that water is incompressable. This is true because once I pushed the syringe, it transferred the push force to make the lever joints move in directed positions which was used to carry, lift and/or throw items.

This project also demontrated hydraulic power as well. It proved the following things:

  • You can make hydraulic powered phenomens like I did
  • You can learn and have fun with hydropower
  • And you can learn alot about hydropower

My hypothesis was correct. Levers really played a big part of this project and hydropower.

Application

Main idea:

The purpose of this project is to create something that can push, pull, or even carry items. This project can be used for entertainment as well.

How does my science project relate to real life and the wider scientific field?:

  • This relates to real life by engineering because the engineering design process to solve. I solved that there is ways you can carry object without using you're hands.
  • This can also relate to real life because in the real world, people depand on hydropower because it can provide electricity and many more.
  • This science field was built at home.

How can the results of your experiment apply to society?

This can affect society ina positive way. This project can be used for vairties of random things like, organizing chess players, for fun or even if it was bigger, it can help assemble car pieces together. It will help humans with simple tasks to impossible tasks.

What did I solve (practical problem)

That you can use a litle bit of engineering and hydropower to create a push, pull and carriyng robotic hand.

Sources Of Error

There were several major sources of error in my experiment:

  • Some materials like metal string was deliverd very late.
  • The base was to heavy so the robotic hand was falling offf an major rips were involved. Meaning, I had to restart the base.
  • An old battery was supposed to be under these triangler parts but instead it was too crowed to put anything else ther.
  • Wrong meseaments.
  • Many pieces of the hand was to small.

Acknowledgement

I would like to acknowledge my dad who helped me with my grammar and for helping me build my project to life. I would also say a big thank you to my mom who told me if my project made sense or not and helping me build this machine. Another thank you to my teacher Ms.Bly for teaching a little bit of hydropower and not getting annoyed every morning when I ask her a question. I will also acknowledge me for believing in myself and not giving up.

Thank you!
