Problem
Problem:
- Traffic Disruption: Traditional road crews are slow, require large blockages, and cause significant traffic delays.
- Safety Risk: Contribute to accidents and risk of construction workers deaths
Method
1.Detection Phase The robot uses a 3D sensing camera to scan the road surface in real-time. It is programmed to distinguish between normal asphalt and road malfunctions (cracks or potholes). 2. Constructing Phase The supervisor will start preparing the asphalt cement for the machine while it positions. 3.Repairing Phase The robot squirts out a precise amount of asphalt cement. It only uses the exact amount of material needed, reducing waste compared to manual crews 4.Setting and Control Then the supervisor has to place cones or close the small area so that it can dry.
Analysis
Even though Alberta spends more than $1.2 billion on road repairs, our research shows that standard methods are still expensive and risky. P.A.T.C.H. showed excellent accuracy in detecting cracks during testing; however, we discovered battery problems and lags that impacted the robot's reaction time.
Conclusion
In this project, we investigated how PATCH gives an impact on the society, and how in the future, this idea is sure to expand. To expand on this project, we’d add an extension- a command that allows PATCH to flatten out the surface of the road. This project showed us that innovation is not just about creating something new, but about identifying a real need and developing a practical, meaningful solution. PATCH demonstrates the potential to expand the technology in the future. In conclusion, PATCH is a robot that will help everyone.
