The first digit law, a phenomenon all around us

Benford’s law otherwise known as the first digit law proposes that in a given set of numbers around 30% will have the first digit being one when the expected probability is 11.1%. The law was first discovered back in 1881 by astronomer Simon Newcomb. Whi

Problem

The problem that I am looking to solve in this science project is why specific data sets don't follow the nature of Benford's law.

Method

I started by researching the topic a bit better. Then I came up with my hypothesis. Next, I started conducting all of my tests on different data sets. I started learning about history and why it does not work; finally, I concluded based on my research.

Research

I consulted many different articles to complete this project. I organized all of my research, results and graphs in a spreadsheet. This is the spreadsheet where all of my data was organized:

Data

All of my data was organized in my PowerPoint presentation. I made sure to cover all of the aspects that were important in understanding this phenomenon.

Conclusion

Benford's law is an effective tool for fraud detection and errors when applied in the right circumstances, such as geographical features, GDPs, movies, and more. This law will not work in cases where there are no random numbers or some limitations. The phenomenon and the probabilities that come from it are based on the mathematical algorithms of digits' appearance in randomly generated numbers in a large data set.
