Hypothesis

if saltwater is used as an electrolyte with a copper wire and a zinc nail as electrodes, then the reaction between the saltwater and the metals will produce a measurable electrical potential diffrence as indicated by the voltmeter.

Research

i had researched this topic for a while and used it to further understand the chemical reaction between the chlorine and sodium to generate positivly charged and negatively charged electrodes

Variables

the constant was the zinc nail and copper wire

the independent variable was the amount of salt in the water

the dependent variable was the voltage out put

Procedure

1. make a saltwater solution by adding water and salt to a small jar.

2.place a zinc coated nail partly into the solution & tape it to one side of the jar (this is the negative electrode)

3. place a copper coated wire prtly into the solution and tape it to the other side of the jar (this is the positive electrode)

4. attach one of the alligator clips to the end of the zinc nail not in the solution

5. attach the other side of the aligator clip to the negative side of the voltimeter

6.take another alligator clip & attach it to the end of the copper wire not in the solution

7. attach the other side of the clip to the positive side of the voltimeter

Observations

as i added more salt to the solution the voltage would drop then increase but never did it get higher than the first teaspoon of salt

Analysis

i had made a data graph of the power generated instantly and after 3 mins i anilised the data to to show me that the first teaspoon of salt generated the most power

Conclusion

In conclusion, the saltwater battery experiment demonstrated the potential for generating electricity through an electrochemical reaction using simple materials. The voltmeter readings indicated a measurable voltage produced by the saltwater solution in conjunction with the zinc-coated nail and copper wire setup. This suggests that saltwater has the ability to serve as an electrolyte for energy production. Furthermore, the project highlights the accessibility of materials and the potential for using saltwater-based batteries

as a sustainable energy source.

Despite its simplicity, the experiment opens the door to further exploration and development in the realm of alternative energy solutions.

Continued research in this area could lead to innovative applications for saltwater energy technology.

Application

i used my resaerch as a way to find out why it would not work to start then it helped me understand that it was just that i had to adjust the position of the positive and negative electrodes

Sources Of Error

at first i failed to produce any power or i would produce power for a secend before it would dissapate again then after more research i found all i had to do was adjust the zinc nail
