Hypothesis
If the type of music listened by a student is changed, then the grades of a student will change as well because different types of music can be distracting or concentrating to students while studying. Music with lyrics are catchy and hard not to focus on by humans. This makes concentration on studying difficult for students without getting distracted.

The manipulated variable is the type of music. In this lab, the type of music will be changed by having 4 groups of students listen to a different kind of music, or no music at all.
Responding Variable:
The responding variable is the grade (%) of the test.

The test |
This will be controlled by ensuring that every student receives the exact same test. |
Some tests can be easier than others, and so if students all complete tests that are different levels of difficulty, then this will affect students' grades. We only want the music listened to while studying to be the influential factor in this experiment. |

The amount of time to study for the test |
This will be ensured by having all students only start and end studying as per instructions of the experimenters/leaders. We will use a stopwatch to make sure all students study for the same amount of time. |
If some students study for more time than others, then they will receive an advantage on the test hence affecting the grade. We only want the music listened to while studying to be the influential factor in this experiment. |

The people around the person taking the test |
This will be controlled through having every student be separated from one another, without any chances for chatting or getting distracted by peers. |
If some students are not distracted by peers, while others are, then the efficiency of each student studying would be influenced. We only want the music listened to while studying to be the influential factor in this experiment. |
Procedure
Materials:
- Stopwatch x1
- Laptops x36
- Earphones x28
- Test papers x36
- Group list x1
- Pencils x36
- Music #1 recording: Lofi tunes
- Music #2 recording: Sci-fi tune
- Music #3 recording: Popular songs 2024 mashup
Procedure:
- Gather all of the materials needed
- Gather 2C consent forms from each student
- Set up study stations with laptops, earphones, music (if part of that group) and study materials ready to use, ensuring that each student is at their own table without distractions from others.
- Send each student to designated study station
- Once all students are settled into their stations, announce everyone to begin after the count of 3
- As soon as the count of 3 is done, start the stopwatch for 15 minutes
- During 15 minutes, walk around to ensure there are no distractions or cheating, and answer any questions students may have during studying if applicable.
- As soon as the stopwatch hits 15 minutes, have all students stop studying immediately.
- Hand out the test sheets BACKWARDS, at the same time ensure all study materials and objects (other than writing utensils) are put away by each student such as:
- Laptops
- Flashcards
- Headphones
- Once every student is ready, at the count of 3 announce students to flip their tests and begin writing.
- As soon as the count of 3 is done, immediately start the stopwatch for 15 minutes.
- During 15 minutes, walk around students to ensure there is no cheating or distractions. Answer any questions students may have during the test if applicable.
- As soon as the stopwatch hits 15 minutes, all students must stop writing and flip and hand in their tests.
- After the test is completed, thank students for their time and cleanup materials.
Safety Considerations:
- Ensure the music level is not too loud otherwise students ears could be damaged
- Pencils should not be thrown/poked at people
