Water Testing!

Tap water, storm water, hauled water and filtered water to determine which is safest to drink. I tested for bacteria, ammonium chloride, fluoride, copper, lead and other possible contamination..

Hypothesis

If I test different sources of water, then I think that filtered water will have the cleanest results because a water filter can filter out most of bacteria that is in tap water.

Research

Water testing is one of the most important jobs, environmental engineers (like my mom) test water from many sources to see what molecules are in the water. So if you have a pool and want to test it to see if it's clean or not? Go ahead and see, or in your new well for your cabin may be dirty? Go test it and see what happens! Water testing is pretty important for health, you’re water could be making your face dry without you knowing so you can test it to see how dirty it really is and maybe get a water filter and trying it again to get better results or worse results. What can make water clean? TO make sure that our water is clean, drinking water supplies gets shared with the provincial, territorial, federal and the municipal governments to make sure that when drinking water it is safe and won’t harm anybody. Things that can make water unsafe is pH. pH tells you how  of acidity is in your drinking water. To measure pH you can use test strips that you put in the water, it  then will turn a color which tells you the pH by looking at the card of pH that it gives you. There is millions of different types of bacteria, they are all around the world and it is inside your mouth.Bacteria makes up your microbiome which helps you body stay healthy. Other bacteria can make you sick, it can give you a cold or it can make you really sick. It's treated with antibiotics. To test your water for bacteria, you can use a bacteria water test kit to see if your water has any. Most bacteria water test kits use a orange powder called coliform/E, when you put your water in the powder you need to put in a place that's cool and no sunlight, then you wait 48 hours. After you wait you take it out of the area and the water should be yellow or green, green means that there is bacteria in the water where yellow means no bacteria.

Responding

How I can measure the pH levels with the chart. If the bacteria test came in green or yellow

 Controlled

  • All sources of water will use the same tester kit
  • How many minutes I put in for the test strips
  • How much I put water in the bottle/glass

manipluated

  • Types of water that I use.
  • The temp of the water.
  • The jars that I store the water in.

Procedure

         Test strip

  1. Get all glasses/bottles of water ready
  2. Put test strip in and wait for the pH to appear
  3. Record results onto the chart
  4. Repeat with new bottle/glass of water

Bacteria test

  1. Put water into the container with the powder
  2. Put it in a cool spot with no sunlight getting in
  3. Wait 48 hours
  4. Put the results into chart.

Analysis

  • Bacteria test
  • Pond was the only one that had bacteria in it
  • Other water types did not have any layers or from of any bacteria
  • Pond water had a lot of dirt
  • Does the workers that drive the water truck clean the tank? Or does it form bacteria in the inside of the tanks

Conclusion

My Hypothesis was incorrect because filtered water had nothing that that would really harm you except for ammonia chloride, it can damage your tissues inside your body were as fluoride can be only a tiny bit bad, tap water only had 10 PPM. It only affects your teeth. So I decided to say that tap water was the best water for drinking water. Hauled water had two things highlighted and that would be bad, it was both ammonia chloride and fluoride. Pond water was dirty because of all the bacteria so and not save to drink. But the reason why filtered water had bad results was because the filter in the fridge was needing attention and we did not have time so we went on with the experiment. My next step could be to test water cleaners, water filters, and things that can keep drinking water safe to drink without getting sick or harming you. Water filters can make your water dirty if they need to be changed.

Application

You could use this experiment for testing water to see how clean your water really is because if your water is dirty you can test it to see if its drinkable or bad for you, the ph tells how much acid it has in it so if your wondering why Dasani water tastes bad, then i’m about to make you shocked, Dasani water is processed with a toxic level of 5, you can taste all of these minerals inside of it. Some areas in Canada Don’t have clean water to drink, Lots of people have to buy water because the tap water is really dirty. Lots of first nation reserves are not safe to drink because of the bacteria that is in the water. The water could be so dirty that when you turn on the tap sludge can come out of your tap (mud). Some cities got new water filter plants to filter the water. Even if your water is clear it can still be dirty, it is best to test your drinking water with a test strip not only for pH but for many more substances.

Sources Of Error

  • Filter needed to be  changed
  • Some of the results were not right so we looked at the photo that we took of the strip
  • Also we had to clean the tube were we out the strip in but we needed to clean it but I put to much soap in and it took to long to wash out before we could even do the next test and the soap took a long time to come out because it would stick to the bottom
  • Needed to do extra testing to make sure that it was correct.
