Life of A Bean With Different Amounts of Light

Experimenting with 3 plants all in different amounts of light, one being in a lot of light, another being in a bit of light and the last one in no light.

Hypothesis

```Hypothesis #1
If we give a lot of sunlight to the black eyed beans/peas, then it won't grow as much as the group of beans with just enough sunlight because the sunlight to the amount of water is not equal.
Hypothesis #2
If we give just enough sunlight to the black eyed peas/beans, then it will probably grow healthier or more than the other two groups of beans because it doesn't have too much sunlight or too little.
Hypothesis #3
If we give barely any sunlight to the black eyed beans/peas, then it will grow even worse than the plant in a lot of sunlight beacause it's not letting the sunlight evaporate the water that it gets and it will become overwatered.```
Research
```When we were reserching, we found out that black eyed beans/peas fully germinate and start to sprout between 8-10 days and as we only had 3 weeks to complete this project we thought this would be the perfect bean to grow and learn more about. Also while we were reserching we found out that black eyed beans really like the sun and need water. Usually black eyed beans grow 36 inches or 3ft. Black eyed beans need to be kept in warm place in order to be able to survive. If a black eyed bean is kept in the cold or chilly weather, it will start wilting and die. Black eyed beans are quite healthy and very nutritious if you were looking to eat them. Black eyed peas are a type of cowpea and fit into the family of peas and beans. Black eyed beans have their name because if you look closely at the middle on one of the sides of the bean, you will spot a black spot on the bean and you will see that it looks like an eye. Black eyed beans need light in order to survive and can't live without water just like a lot of other plants.
```
Variables
```There are three main variables that are being used.

Independent Variable
One being an independent or manipulated variable. This variable can be the cause of something changing. The only manipulated or independent variable in our project will be the amount of light.

Dependent Variables
There is also dependent variables. Dependent variables are the effect and what happens. Our dependent variable is how many inches our plants have grown.

Controlled Variables
Our controlled variable, which is something that doesn't change throughout the whole experiment, is the amount of water given to each of the plants.
```
Procedure
`To start our procedure we're gonna germinate our beans. We're gonna start by taking 30-36 beans, (10-12 beans for each pot) and we're gonna put them in a long narrow container. Then we're gonna spread all of the beans out evenly in order to be able to grow properly and not ruin other beans' growth. After that we're gonna spray water on top of the beans and also inside and around the container. Once that is done, we're going to wait for about 4-5 days and wait for the beans to sprout. This process will make the beans sprout quicker and easier to grow. After they have sprouted and germinated we're gonna dig a hole about and inch or two deep into the soil and put in the seeds for each plant. Now we're gonna cover the hole up with soil and water them all the same amount of water. Then we're gonna put each of the plants in their designated amount of light, one plant in a lot of light, one plant in just enough light, and one where there's absolutely no light. Then we're gonna wait and see how much each plant grows through the 3 weeks of our project!`
Observations
```February 26, 2021
We put the beans in a tray full of water to let them soak and grow to be ready for pot planting.

February 27, 2021
The beans stared to grow due to the water going inside and letting it soak in.

February 28, 2021
The beans started to sprout thin, white tails. This means they are almost ready to be put in pots.

March 1, 2021 A.M
The tails grew longer and thicker from the water.

March 1, 2021 P.M
We put 10 beans in each pot with soil and covered them with some soil on top.

March 3, 2021
The group of black eyed beans/peas with a lot of sunlight started to have the beans stick out. The beans with just enough sunlight do the same and the group of beans with barely any sunlight has 3 beans slightly sticking out.

March 5, 2021
We numbered each pot so the pot with a lot of sunlight is pot number 1, the pot with just enough sunlight is pot number 2 and the 3rd pot is the one with barely any sunlight. The tails start curving and sticking out in pot number 1 and the beans become slightly green. In pot number 2, some of the tails start to curve and in pot number 3, the tails curve as well.

March 6, 2021
The beans start to open in pot number 1 and there were leaves starting to come out of the beans. In pot number 2, some of the beans had leaves sprouting and in pot number 3, the beans just started opening.

March 9, 2021
In pot number 1, the leaves grew a bit of a stem and the leaves looked sturdier and healthy. In pot number 2, the leaves were a bit smaller than in pot number 1 and looked a bit more delicate. In pot number 3, some of the leaves grew a bit taller.

March 11, 2021
In pot number 1, the leaves have grown bigger and are now like a spinage green color. In pot number 2, the leaves are a bit lighter of a green and are a bit smaller. In pot number 3, some of the leaves slightly grew taller but are still small.

March 12, 2021
In pot number 1, the beans have grown a dark green and are slightly short. In pot number 2, the beans are a bit lighter green. In pot number 3, the beans are small but tall and yellow.
```
Analysis
`Out of 100 dry black eyed peas, 25 did not germinate. Only 3/4 of the beans germinated and could be used for planting. In pot number 1, 9/10 of the beans have sprouted. In pot number 2, also 9/10 of the beans have sprouted and in pot number 3, 8/10 of the beans have sprouted. In pot number 1, the beans have grown around 3 cm on March 12, 2021. In pot number 2, the beans have grown around 4 cm and in pot number 3, the beans have grown 4 cm but one of them has grown 8 cm. The tallest beans are in pot number 3 althought they look very delicate. We think this is because in pot number 3, there is barely any sunlight so the beans grew taller because they were looking for sunlight. On the other hand, in pot number 1, the leaves look greener and sturdier, but they are shorter because they already have enough sunlight.`
Conclusion
`Because in the pot #1 the leaves are stronger, larger and a darker green than in the other 3 pots, the first group of beans have grown the best. We gave the same amount of water to each plant at the same time but still pot number 1's leaves have grown the best, this means that the amount of light positively affects the growth of black eyed beans when all the other variables are the same. On the final day of our observations, the beans in pot number 1 have grown 3 cm, in pot number 2, the beans have grown around 3-4 cm and in pot number 3, the beans have grown 4 cm but one of them has grown 8 cm.`
Application
`Now that we know that black eyed beans/peas grow best in a lot of sunlight, we know that if we are going to plant them again, we will right away put them in a lot of sunlight. This is useful for farming beans to get a better result from them and have stronger beans. This is a good thing to know because if you're hoping to get sturdy and healthy beans, then you will know the more sunlight they get the better they grow. Also, we know how black eyed beans will react to different amounts of light and how well they will survive.`
Sources Of Error
```We didn't measure how tall the beans have grown on the days that we took photos of them. We also should have took the photos everyday instead of skipping days. We also, didn't have enough time for the black eyed beans/peas to fully grow but, we had enough time to do our conclusion. The time allocated for the project didn't allow us to observe the full life cycle of the black eyed peas but we still had enough data collected to see which amount of sunlight the beans grow best in.
