Germs

My project is all about germs and how we can avoid them. I researched how we can stay away from them by keeping clean and more!

Problem

Germs can invade plants, animals and people.

What are the types of germs and what can we do to protect oursleves against them?

Method

I wanted to know the main types of germs and found my information on https://kidshealth.org/en/kids/germs.html   and found that there are four main types of germs, bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa.

I also wanted to research how these germs spread and how to prevent ourselves from getting sick. I conducted online reasearch and watched videos in order to find the answers to my questions.

This is where I found information about Hand Sanitizer https://www.livescience.com/hand-sanitizer.html#:~:text=Hand%20sanitizer%20works%20to%20kill,least%2060%25%20alcohol%20in%20it.&text=Hand%20sanitizers%20provide%20a%20convenient,in%20visible%20dirt%20or%20grease and I learned:

Hand Sanitizer does kill bacteria. But, only if the hand sanitizer is made of 60% Alcohol. You should use it, when water and soap are not available. Alcohol is the key ingredient. Alcohol and destroy disease- causing agents.

I found reasearch about hand washing https://kidshealth.org/en/kids/wash-hands.html?ref=search

Washing your hands is the best way to stop germs. Think about what you touched today, by doing that you came in contact with germs; and it’s easy to put your hands in your mouth. You probably ate with your hands today. You can’t wear gloves all day, so we need to wash our hands.

When should I wash my hands:

  • Before you touch food                             - after playing outside
  • When your hands are dirty
  • After in the bathroom
  • After coughing/sneezing
  • After touching animals
  • And before and after seeing someone sick

This is the video where I learned about vaccines https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SproXmRUkI

Scientists and doctors have worked very hard to find a way to help people that were sick. And then, they invented vaccines. Vaccines are a type of medicine that goes into your body, to help you not get sick from bad diseases. Vaccines are usually placed in you body through a shot, that’s called a vaccination. Vaccines are liquid, in a small tube in the needle.

Germs are actually in vaccines. But the germs are dead or very weak, so it’s not dangerous. While your body is defeating those dead germs, your body is making new special particles that will help your body if the germ comes back inside again. A vaccine doesn’t help all diseases, it only helps get your body ready to fight it.

The website where I found info about COVID-19 https://kidshealth.org/en/parents/coronavirus.html

At the end of 2019, a new virus was spreading. Called Coronavirus, and it spread to all over the world and has turned it upside down. Since so many people got it, we had to go into quarantine. Where we had to stay home as much as possible. It spreads through the mouth, and that’s why we wear masks today. Another name for the coronavirus is COVID-19

Some symptoms for COVID-19 are:

  • Fever                                                       - tiredness
  • Coughing
  • Belly pain
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of taste and/or smell

Where I found ways to prevent from getting sick https://kidshealth.org/

  • Wear a mask at all times necessary (For COVID)
  • Wash your hands often
  • Use Hand Sanitizer when you can’t wash your hands
  • Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze
  • Stay home if you are sick until you get better
  • Blow your nose in a tissue and dispose right away
  • See the doctor if something is really wrong

Research

What are Germs?

Germs are tiny organisms/living things that can cause disease and sickness. There are four main types of germs. They are bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa. Germs can invade plants, animals and people. They can make us sick.

Germs can eat/attack nutrients and energy. They can make toxins. Those toxins can cause symptoms of common infections like fevers, runny noses, coughing and puking.

The 4 main types of germs

#1 Bacteria

They are tiny one-celled creatures that get their nutrients from their environment to live. That environment could be a human body. Bacteria can reproduce outside the body or within. That could cause infection. Some are: ear infections, sore throats, cavities and pneumonia.

Not all Bacteria is bad though. Good bacteria lives in our intestines and and they help us use the nutrients in the food we eat and make waste. Some bacteria is used in medicine.

#2 Fungi

Fungi is multi-celled (made of lots of cells) plant-like organisms. Fungi cannot make food out of soil, water and air but instead they get their nutrients from plants, people and animals. Fungi likes to be in warm places. And fungi is not dangerous to those who are healthy. An example of fungi is Athlete's foot.

#3 Viruses                                                                                                                                                        They need to be inside living cells to grow and reproduce. They can’t live long if they aren't in a living thing. Where the virus lives in, is called a host. Viruses can spread and make people sick. They can shortly live on doorknobs and surfaces. Viruses cause chicken pox, measles, flu and many other diseases, like COVID.

#4 Protozoa                                                                                                                            They are one-celled organisms that love moisture and spreads through water. Some Protozoa can cause intestinal infections that lead to nausea and belly pain.

Conclusion

Based on what I found during this time of research, the best ways to prevent from getting germs is keeping clean. From hand washing, hand sanitizer and not spreading your germs.

And from more research I found that there are four main types of germs. They are Bacteria, Fungi, Viruses and Protozoa.

During the past year we had to keep clean and stay away from germs. If a pandemic happened again, we would be more prepared.
