Which liquids rust screws the most

which liquid substance can rust a screw the most?

Grade 5

Hypothesis

My hypothesis is... coke is going to rust the the screw the most out of the other fluids most because it is the most carbonated, and laundry detergent is going to rust the least.

                                       ⬆️

                                    the fluids

air, laundry detergent, water, coke, and vineger

Research

Different substances can cause different amounts of rust on iron nails. The order of rusting from strongest to weakest is: vinegar, water, soda, detergent, and air.thats what someone who did the same project got but we got (strongest to weakest)Air,water, vineger, soda, and detergent.

Variables

Control variable: The amount of fluid I put in, the box I use, which screw I use, how long the screws are in the fluid.
Responding variable: How much the screw rusts.
Manipulated variable: Which fluid I use.

Procedure

Procedure

  1. Prepare the screws: Clean the screws by wiping them with a dry cloth to remove any oils or debris. This ensures that the test results are not affected by dirt or other substances on the screws.

  2. Label the containers: Label each container with the name of the liquid it will hold: Coke, Water, Vinegar, Laundry Detergent, and Air (control).

  3. Place the screws: Place one screw in each container. Make sure the screw is completely submerged in the liquid for the liquids that are meant to cover it. For the air test, leave the screw exposed to air but place it in a container to prevent contamination.

  4. Observation Period: Leave the screws in their respective liquids for a set amount of time (e.g., 7 days). Check daily for any visible changes such as rust, discoloration, or other signs of corrosion.

  5. Documentation: Document any changes in the screws with photos or written notes. After the observation period, measure the amount of rust on each screw, if any, and note the difference between the liquids.

  6. Control Test: The screw exposed to air will serve as the control to compare with the other liquids. Since air alone can cause rust over time, it will help determine the baseline for rust formation without the added influence of any liquid.

Observations

WEEK LATER

air has been rusting the most
laundry detergent rusted the least

Analysis

AIR:air rusted the most and pieces fell off of it                                   DETERGENT: detergent rusted the least and it got cleaner

VINEGER:vineger broke it and changed its color from silver to black            WATER: water made it sharper and skinnier

SODA: soda didn't do much other then changing its color

Conclusion

after two weeks the ranking of the most rusted are...

1. air

2. water

3, vinegar

4, soda

5. detergent

Application

if you need to store screws which would be the best, air, water, soda, detergent, and vinegar.

Sources Of Error

if we cut ourselves with the screw we could get tetnas
