Problem

How can parents better understand how video games affect kids?

Method

The project we did wasn't an expiremental project it was a non-expiremental project

Research

Global sales by Video Game Genre

Table 1. What will happen if kids play too many video games?
There are some side effects to video games if you play above the standard
timing and play for an excessive amount of time some effects are:
o Obesity because of the lack of physical body movements
o Muscle pains because of the lack of exercise
o Eye distress like red eyes, less blinking and watery eyes because when
we look at something for a long time our eyes get hit by air and start
evaporating (not literally)
o Playing violent games can cause aggressive behavior

Mostly this is why our parents are constantly telling us that video games are very
bad for us. But we do know that this is entirely not true

Table 2. Things that happen when you play video games
Category Benefit Disadvantage
Body
movement

A physical structure like playing
a piano

Obesity and muscle pains

Mental body Your brain is working on

something

Body doesn't get enough sun which
causes vitamin D deficiency
Can also give poor social skills
Take time away from family

Brain Strengthens neural circuits and
mentally challenges your brain

Can cause aggressive behavior or
tension or overstress and insomnia

Academics Good at logical reasoning
Can also help get a job with
high skill

Poor at other subjects such as math
etc. and can be hard to find jobs
requiring high academics

Eye Can sometimes help your eyes

focus on something

Can cause eye distress
Can make your vision low
Can cause red eyes
Can cause watery eyes and less
blinking

Table 3. Reasonable rules for parents to set on kid's video games are
Rule
Number

Description of Reasonable Rule

1 If you are under 10 years old, you should only play for an hour or
more in a day but on weekends you can play for an hour and a half.
If you are 10 to 14 years old, you should only play for an hour and a
half but on weekends you can play for 2 to 3 hours.
For children 2 to 4 years limit screen time between 20 to 30 minutes
2 How much money (if any), kids can spend on video games (including

in-game purchases)

3 Who kids can play with online.
4 What kids can do if they encounter uncomfortable situations when

playing with others

5 Consider playing as a family to help build better family bonds and
also use as an opportunity to teach life lessons such as “it is ok to
lose”

Table 4. Must-do rules for parents to set on kid's video games
Rule
Number

Description of Reasonable Rule

1 Must do rules are rules that have to be done for your safety. In some games
you can talk to random people and sometimes people are mean or say
inappropriate stuff, sometimes they can bully you online, so parents want to
protect you from people like that.

2 Have a parental control that controls a child if they do something called
“Trash Talk” and it also tells the parent whether another kid is bullying the
child or what type of violence the parent's child's game is. Sometimes a
parental control gives a child screen time within an hour and makes sure the
child doesn’t say any personal information to anyone

3 Follow ESRB ratings

• E (everyone) E is rated everyone for little kids up to 10
• E 10+ are for the kids who are above 10 but less than 13 this doesn’t have much violence yet
• T(teen/teenager game) this is for 13-17 years of age. Includes violence
• M (stands for mature and has blood and violence) this age group is for 18 years and above

Data

Many parents playing video games with their children don’t think that it is a bad
idea to play with their children as they have been playing video games in their
youth. Many people said that this could help in coordination and teamwork. A
parent said that ‘I used to play Mario kart as a kid and some shooting games
but i know that just because I played Mario doesn’t mean that I become a
plumber with a red hat'. "When i play with my kid it's an easier way to
communicate with them and to teach them it's okay to lose.I also think that gun
games don't have much of a different approach from the real world and plus they
need to know what the world really is”.

Conclusion

As you can see there is much to learn about video games. Video games can be
good and bad for you. The pros are that it can help in high thinking skill and the
cons are eye problems, aggressive behavior, and bad mental being. If parents let
their kid play games with them or let them play with their friends, let them know
all this information.According to our research on a reasonable rule we found out that our Hypothesis
was true. A reasonable rule for screen limit would be an hour and age restriction
ratings should be followed for a reasonable rule and that there are some
unreasonable rules when it is like 3 hours a day or m rated games for 6-year
olds. Even though violent games seem fun they have a lot more side effects
than the good stuff. So, parents should understand about the time and age rating
restriction according to Canadian law. Most parents should sometimes play with their child and tell them when they lose
that it is okay to lose and help in teamwork and help in social skills. Parent should always have parental control and see what the child is doing and is thechild behaving appropriately online. If not, the parents can delete the game and
give a better one for the sake of the child.
