Problem
The problem with Cereals around Canada is that they are eaten daily by millions of kids, and they aren’t as healthy as they should be. Through research I figured out the benefits and the risks of cereal and how bad and good they are. Cereal has more risks than benefits and this needs to be addressed to the kids around Canada. Cereal is also mentioned to be “healthy” by commercials and is not looked at twice before it is bought by people. Cereals are also easy and convenient to make early in the morning or any type of day causing us to buy it even more often. It also happens to be less expensive than other breakfast meals and is a popular type of food. Cereals are also over highly processed with a lot of food dye and empty calories that do not do any good for you. Cereals are eaten to commonly and they don’t do any good for you this is a huge problem and can cause health issues if the consumption of cereals are eaten at the rate they are now.
Method
Hypothesis My hypothesis was that cereals marketed for children in Canada would be unhealthy and would fail to meet nutritional recommendation criteria’s of Canada.
Research I found out cereals were health and unhealthy because of the labels that I was seeing on the back of my cereal boxes and my knowledge of cereal. I then researched 50 cereals and put them into pie charts and box graphs. and learned that my hypothesis is correct.
Observations I observed and learned that my hypotheses was correct. Hot cereals seemed to be the most healthy because of the lack of artificial colour.
Summary All 50 cereals never met a certain health criteria even if some met one or more . All of the cereals are unhealthy in one or more way none are the “healthiest” cereal you can but on market.
Hypothesis and conclusion My hypothesis was generally what I expected would happen, none met health criteria’s exactly but some still met the main recommendations. This directly includes my conclusion of ,none are 100% healthy and that three-quarters are high in carbohydrates.
Future thoughts
I think that in the future I should really dig deep into what the cereals can do to the children’s body amd how it can affect their daily life
Research
I researched all of the recommendations of sugar, sodium etc to find out how to classify the cereals as healthy and not healthy. I also researched all 50 cereals that I put into the pie charts and the box graphs while also figuring out the labels of the cereals boxes. As well I researched how many kids around Canada eat cereal on a daily basis and what makes a cereal healthy. Something else that I figured out was how cereal brands put up adds that claim to be healthy and have a balanced diet while proving them wrong. I also researched highly processed cereals and compared them to hot cereals.
Data
Over this project I have observed that hot cereals are more healthy then other types of cereals even if they tend to be more expensive. The 50 cereals that I have collected have all had different labels with a few that matched each other. I have also seen all of the cereals that are most commonly eaten by children and that the only way they affect children is in negative way. I have seen that highly over processed cereal is what is worst for kids and gives them an unbalanced diets daily but they don’t know about it. Cereals are affecting kids lives all around the world even when it come to school children need to stop consuming this much cereal.
Conclusion
None of the cereal products marketed to children in Canada fully meet dietary recommendations. While some cereals meet one or more individual recommendations, none meet all recommended criteria. More than three quarters of products contain high levels of carbohydrates. All Cereals are unhealthy in one or more ways making none of them the “healthiest” cereal that you can buy of the market.
