A Sole Scent Solution: Solving Foot Odor

Problem

In our religion, we pray 5 times a day, and it is crucial to be clean. But with an average of

6 hours a day at school or at work which includes all the running/walking  and sweating

the feet begin to stink!

Our project started because we used to hate our smelly feet like after gym class or basketball practice. We began brainstorming on how to tackle this problem, and with some research we learnt that there was no product that would fully diesel any abhor foot odour. With the temperatures increasing, and the sweltering heat, the odour produced would become a larger task to resolve.

We decided we would embark on the journey to create our very own insoles for the feet, that will not only help reduce the odour of our stinky feet but also innovate something comfortable for wearing throughout the day. We wanted to create something that will keep our feet smell fresh.

Method

  1. Use any shoe of your size - we used size 9 as our guide when creating the insoles.
  2. Use foam sheets and cut them into the size of the insole - we did 3 layers of foam  for one insole.
  3. Rip open a diaper and cut into the shape of the insole, make sure to hot glue or staple the edges to prevent polymer from falling out. (You should be able to have two insole shapes made with one diaper)
  4. Make an epsom salt gel: start  with 20g of lavender epsom salt and mix with 15 mL of water, until dissolved.
  5. Then add 14 g of gelatin powder and agitate until gel is formed
  6. Now take a spoon and spread the gel onto the layer of the diaper

    7.     Use 2.5 g of baking soda on the same layer

    8.     Take epsom salt layer and glue onto the next layer, poke holes on the second one to make sure fumes are let out.

    9.     On the second layer add 15 drops of lavender oil as it will absorb into the diaper sole then    hot glue it onto a foam sole shape poked with holes to let fumes out.

    10.     Now that it is glued on you have made your insole!

    11.     Repeat this process one more time in order to make replicas for both feet.

Analysis

Prototypes:

PROTOTYPES:

Model 1:

  • The diapers were too thick so the sole wasn’t fitting
  • Roof of shoe was touching the sole
  • Very messy not neat
  • Gel was falling from the sides
  • Holes didn’t let fumes out

Model 2:

  • We used thinner diapers and lowered the layers so the sole would fit
  • We hot glued it neatly and cut the diapers in a way where nothing would fall
  • Our holes were more bigger so the fumes came out easier

Conclusion

In conclusion, we made special insoles to stop smelly feet during long school days and activities. We used simple things to make it accessible to everyone like foam, diapers, and common items to create a comfy solution.

Our idea was to combine lavender oil, epsom salts, and baking soda for better results. These materials fight bacteria that cause foot odor. Our insole process was quite easy, using foam, lavender oil and our own homemade gel. After our first model, we improved the insole model by using thinner layers and better holes. This made them more comfy and effective for the daily use.

According to our data, each person noticed and scored each category differently, however, they all noticed that the insoles improved foot odor. The lasting lavender scent was a success. In short, our project offers a simple solution for smelly feet. Combining lavender oil, epsom salts, and baking soda in our insoles provides a fresh and comfy answer for anyone dealing with foot odor.
