Arduino Bud: The Solution to Dying Plants

This is an innovative project about an automatic watering system for plants. Combining computer science, Arduino Uno and sensors to detect moisture levels in plants and water accordingly. This project can help reduce water consumption.

Problem

Water scarcity is an urgent issue that affects Calgary at this time especially when water is evaporated in everyday activities like watering plants. Giving plants an overly amount of water is a common mistake we make .Even restrictions have been established to save the unnecessary sum of water use through regulating watering to before sunrise or after sunset, Now, Imagine a game-changing system that not only prevents water waste but also optimizes  time  in our daily lives throughout this drought. Presenting the Arduino Bud , a smart water system solution that combines technology with eco-friendliness. This project is a response/solution to the global water crisis. It leads us to a sustainable future in the midst of environmental challenge.

 

Method

  • Supplies:

  • Arduino Uno
  • Relay model 5 V (4)
  • Soil Moisture sensors (4)
  • 9V BATTERY
  • Jumper wires
  • Water tubes
  • Water pump (4)
  • Breadboard
    • Plant pots
    • Water bowl
    • Laptop for coding

Procedure:

1. Setting up :

               Put together Arduino board, Relay Model, Soil moisture sensors, pump, batteries and breadboard using jumper wires.

To the pump, attach a water tube and connect it to the plant's soil. Put moisture sensors in the soil as well.

2. Coding the arduino :

               Use the 

 

3. Starting the experiment:

                Attach the computer to our system and power the arduino board.

After setting up all variables, put the plant in a suitable location with sunlight, accessibility, etc.

Measure the water amount per day

See conditions of plant

 

Variables

Independant Variable: soil moisture levels?

Dependant variables: condition of plants/ plant growth, 

Control variable: sunlight, humidity, water, fertilizer

 

 

 

 

 

Analysis

 

- Exposure to outdoor elements (water, sunlight) can damage electronic parts of the system and sustainibility. A waterproof case will protect the system from moisture, dust, and other environmental problems for it, making it suitable for outdoor use and increasing its durability outside.

- The system runs out of batery quickly : 

        *high battery consumption

       * because of continuous operation

       *low battery capacity

       *Too much tasks for battery (overworking)

ANSWERS: 

1. Create a timer

2. Take out some pumps

3. Put a second battery outlet

4. Improving code for less task drainage.

- Short jumper cables restrict movements and flexibility of system

- Too many parts can create the system to be easily broken, securing parts together is safer.
