Automatic Plant Watering System

This is a project where a coded Lego structure waters plants standing under the machine by rotating motors.

Hypothesis

Experiment: If the machine works, then water spilling would be reduced because it will have a selected amount of water being spilled rather than watering the plant from eye sight. It would be a good thing for the plant because it will have the perfect amount of water.

Research

Sunlight:

  • Avoid too much light
  • Avoid too little light
  • Needs 6-8 hours of sunlight a day

Water:

  • Needs to be watered every 5-7 days
  • About 2-4 table spoons per serving
  • Avoid keeping too wet

Variables

Manipulated: Water spilling time - what you change in the experiment Controlled: Cooldown between watering, plant, watering location - what stays the same in the experiment Responding: Water usage - what changes in the experiment

Procedure

Firstly, Start the machine by pressing the start button and entering a passcode. This will start the machine and start rotating the motors. After the machine has finished the script, it will show a checkmark. Once the machine confirms the plant has been watered, it will show another checkmark. After that is done, the process is over. There is a passcode so that you wouldn’t accidentally water the plant an extra time.

Observations

Analysis

This experiment shows that a machine can water the plant by itself saving water and time, it also shows that such machines can help humans by watering plants when humans are busy. The machine is also helpful because you select an amount of water and the machine will water the same amount.

Conclusion

The experiment succeeded because the machine worked. We were able to make a machine that watered a plant when you clicked a button. This helped because you wouldn't spill water when watering because the machine watered for you. So, in conclusion, our experiment succeeded.

Application

How is this experiment important/relevant to the real world? The experiment is important because lots of water is spilled when watering plants by hand. This machine makes sure that the plant gets watered as much as you set it to be. People could use it if they need to water it but you can not use something to water by hand. You would only need to press a button, and the plant is watered!

Sources Of Error

What could’ve gone wrong in our project is that the machine wouldn’t work. This would be very bad because then the machine couldn’t be used. What has gone wrong is LEGO cup prototypes. LEGO spills water all the time and makes even more water wasted. We fixed that by making the cup with larger LEGO pieces and making the holes tiny. Also, what could’ve gone wrong is the cup spilling too much water. This could be bad for the plant and could result in it also wasting too much water.
